Dear supporters,
The end of 2020 marked the second full year since the betterhealthcaretechnology.org was first launched. The website provides a unique style of information not found elsewhere. Website statistics provide us a good method to assess how well it provides healthcare technology information for the community and health professionals.
The Website team thanks the 2020 authors and subscribers for their contributions, interest and support.
New look home page
The world is changing during these trying times and so must our means of communication. Our website plays an important role in promoting the Foundation’s key goals of:
- Promoting research and development in Australia and New Zealand;
- Supporting training and education initiatives in low to middle income countries; and
- Facilitating knowledge exchange with other health professionals and community.
To better meet these needs a new home page was launched in February 2021 which makes it even easier for viewers to find articles of interest. There’s a section with articles written at an easy level for community, and school and university student viewers. There’s also another advanced article section for practising Health Professionals.
Check it out here at: https://www.betterhealthcaretechnology.org/ and feel free to give us feedback via ‘Contact Us’.

A New Website Prize
This year we have introduced an annual competition as an incentive for contributors and to provide due author recognition for their effort. The prize is decided by how many views the article registered during the calendar year.
I am pleased to announce that the 2020 prize winner for The most viewed original article is:
Author: Joshua Hiatt
Article: What is Stereotactic Radiotherapy?
No. of Views: 139 views
Nick Hardcastle (SABR: A New Force in Local Ablative Cancer Treatment) with 120 views was a close runner-up. Both these articles were made suitable for community and health professionals to read.

What makes an article popular?
Unlike an award for the best journal article where an expert committee judges the article on the basis of its scientific quality and written contents, website viewers select an article for a number of intangible reasons. Examples of ways to increase views include:
- a catchy title
- a popular subject
- referrals linked or shared from other viewers
- good writing techniques and keywords for attracting visits by search engines.
Our goal is to make the contents of the article easy to find in a search and spread the word to more viewers. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is certainly a learning process for our editors and authors. But we have found it a worthwhile experience and have learnt from the articles published in 2020 how to write and present the material in a streamline style that website viewers like.
My thanks to the 2020 contributors for their patience when producing what I believe were good website articles with quality scientific content.
Call for Volunteers
In raising community awareness, providing technical knowledge for patients and promoting research and continuing professional development with sufficient funding, the website team needs your support.
Become involved (see ‘Get Involved!’). Be a part of the growing success of the site’ by contributing an article, encouraging your colleagues to subscribe, and/ or provide feedback on articles submitted.
We need website assistant editors for all main specialty areas to lead and co-ordinate new quality website material. And of course, we certainly need authors to contribute and make it a vibrant, informative website (see ‘Author’s Kit’). Please contact me if you are interested in becoming involved.
