Introduction

Thank you to all the inspiring APSIG Ambassadors who walked, ran, climbed, cycled and held a wide variety of less athletic but equally important events to raise money for APSIG in 2018.  These funds are used to support APSIG’s capacity building activities in low-to-middle income countries in the Asia-Pacific, with the aim of improving access to high quality healthcare.

All fundraising help and ideas are welcome. If you are interested in holding an APSIG event, large or small, please contact apsig@acpsem.org.au

Northern Territory:

Team No Tears.

They make them tough in the Northern Territory and with sun 365 days round and crocs roaming the streets, there’s no room for tears.

‘Team No Tears’ collecting cans and bottles for APSIG

The TNT team from the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre in Darwin consists of a mix of RTs and Physicists fearlessly led by our Elekta Engineer, Anthony Herring who can lift one of these bins with his bare pinky finger. The team has started their fundraising with a ‘Cash for Containers’ activity collecting bottles and cans from the department in exchange for a 10c refund going straight into APSIG. The team has also started a lunchtime training program, swimming laps in the hospital pool and doing intense workouts arranged by our Principal RT, Elly Keating.

Western Australia

A Step in the Right Direction

The fearless WA team tackling Jacob’s Ladder.

It was a stormy Sunday morning, October 14 to be exact, when members of the WAAF (West Australian APSIG Fundraisers) met at the bottom of what seemed like an impossible task. A far cry from the safety of the air-conditioned bunkers, the eleven strong crew tied their shoelaces and looked up the 242 concrete stairs the awaited them. The team had representation from ROMPs and DIMPs, public and private, physicists, RTs and nurses, all banding together for WA’s first APSIG fundraiser. They donned their matching Gamma Gurus shirts, and like in the Book of Genesis, the heavens opened and blessed the team with an hour of sunlight to complete their 1000 step challenge.

New South Wales

Team Supreme Sydney

TSS had a great turnout and perfect weather for the Beachside Dash (special thanks to Gamma Gurus for sponsoring the fabulous new APSIG T-shirts which attracted lots of attention at the course!).

The ‘Team Supreme’ Sydney runners after blitzing the Beachside Dash.

Jonathon Sykes also ran 35 km from Palm Beach to Manly – what an amazing effort. Well done Jonathon, that’s exactly half of the 70 km the rest of TSS did combined!

EPSM fundraising events

The dedicated APSIG runners at the Torrens River shortly after dawn.

In 2018 the ACPSEM’s annual Engineering and Physical Sciences in Medicine conference was held in Adelaide.

The fabulous organising committee of the 2018 APSIG ‘Trivia Night’.

To support APSIG the conference organisers included a fun run, a silent auction, a Hollywood photography session at the conference dinner, and the ever popular APSIG trivia night. They were all a huge success and raised significant funds to support APSIG’s projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

Queensland

Wesley Wonders

Shadi Khoei and the rest of the Wesley Wonders cooked up a storm for their inaugural APSIG fundraising morning tea. It wasn’t all traditional party pies and scones, the spread included delicious Middle Eastern dishes, all decorated with the word “APSIG.”  Who knew fundraising could be this much fun?

Let the feast begin!

Victoria

Team Quality Melbourne

Tomas Kron cycling for APSIG in Europe

Tomas Kron rode the truly heroic L’ Eroica bike circuit in Italy and another epic trip around Mt Ventoux in France, and dedicated these marathon journeys to APSIG. It wasn’t all sweat, tears and aching knees, it is understood that there were a fair few stops for coffee and vino rosso along the way.

Peta Lonski’s Harvest Run

Back home Peta Lonski wasn’t to be outdone as she completed the 13.5 km Harvest Run, while Jeff Harwood walked a fair chunk of the spectacular Great Ocean Walk for APSIG.
