For the best 2019 PhD thesis in Physical and Engineering Sciences with relevance for medicine, the prize was awarded to joint winners:
Dr Jake Forster; and
Dr Ben Cooper
—————————————————————————————
Dr Jake Forster
Dr Jake Forster’s PhD research has already been widely awarded for research excellence and was recognised by his examiners as being exceptionally good. Dr Forster developed one of the most sophisticated 4D radiobiological models (Stochastic Squared Radiotherapy – S2RT) for head and neck cancer that will assist personalised radiobiological treatment planning and better patient stratification.
Tumour dynamics on a microscopic level, including hypoxia, vasculature, accelerated repopulation and radiation sensitivity are modelled.
Furthermore, the model can be transitioned to other cancers and has potential for broad implications for radiation oncology. His work has resulted in numerous publications in high impact journals.
In addition to his research, Dr Forster has been a mentor for other students and assisted with ACPSEM events.

Dr Ben Cooper
Dr Ben Cooper’s research developed and realised a new concept in image guided radiation therapy, ‘Respiratory Triggered’ 4D cone beam CT (RT 4D CBCT).
The novel method only acquires patient X-ray images when they are needed using the breathing signal to improve and optimise the use of imaging. The imaging radiation dose can be halved with this innovation.
His examiners commented that it was one of the best theses they had seen. Dr Cooper’s work has the potential to make a significant clinical contribution to radiotherapy. His work has resulted in numerous publications in high impact journals and a patent in multiple countries.
